Houston Personal Injury Claims
Jeff Todd, Personal Injury Attorney in Houston
I'm Jeff Todd. I've practiced law for about 25 years, and I've handled hundreds of injury claims for people in the Houston area. I started out on the other side, defending insurance companies, so I know how they evaluate a claim, how they delay, and when an offer is lower than it should be.
When you hire me, you get me. You'll have my cell number, and you'll talk to me about your case, not an intake screener or an associate you never meet. If you call and I don't think you need a lawyer, I'll tell you that too.

Should You File a Claim for Your Injury?
Not every injury is a case. A personal injury claim in Texas turns on whether someone else's carelessness caused your injury, and on whether there is insurance or an asset behind that person or company to recover from. Those two questions decide most of it.
That's the honest answer, and it's the one I give on the phone. Some people who call me don't need a lawyer, and I tell them so. If you do have a claim, I'll explain what's involved and roughly how long it takes. The call is free either way.
Types of Personal Injury Cases I Handle in Houston
Here are the case types I take in Houston. Each one has its own page with more detail, and you can see the full list on my practice areas page. If your situation isn't listed, call anyway and I'll tell you whether it's something I handle.
Vehicle Accidents Car and commercial vehicle crashes, from rear-enders to multi-car wrecks on the Gulf Freeway.
Truck Accidents 18-wheeler and commercial truck crashes, which usually involve large policies and more than one defendant.
Motorcycle Accidents Crashes involving motorcyclists, where the rider often gets blamed first.
Slip and Fall Accidents Falls at stores and businesses. A lot of Houston attorneys won't take these. I built a practice on them.
Premises Liability Injuries caused by an unsafe condition on someone else's property, from falling objects to bad lighting.
Oilfield Accidents Oilfield and industrial injuries, often with several contractors and several policies in play.
Workplace Accidents Third-party injury claims when you're hurt on the job by someone other than your employer.
Wrongful Death Claims brought by the family when a loved one is killed by someone else's negligence.
Product Liability Injuries caused by a product that was defective or unreasonably dangerous.
Cattle and Livestock Accidents Collisions with livestock loose on a Texas road.
Swimming Pool Accidents Drownings and injuries at residential and commercial pools.
Boating Accidents Injuries on the water around Galveston Bay and the Houston ship channel.
Shooting Accidents Accidental shootings, including cases involving unsecured firearms.
What You Can Recover
If someone else caused your injury, you can pursue compensation for what the injury cost you. That covers money you've already spent, money you didn't earn, and the effect the injury has had on your life. What you can actually recover depends on your injuries, the evidence, and what coverage is available, so I won't put a number on it before I've looked at your case. Here's what it can include:
Lost wages
Property damage
Medical costs
Therapy or outpatient care
Pain and suffering
Loss of quality of life
Don't wait too long to start. In most Texas injury cases you have two years from the date of the injury to file, and evidence gets harder to find as time passes. Once you hire me, I pull the police report, track down witness statements, and get your medical records, because the medical records are what the insurance company will want before it pays anything.
How My Fee Works
You don't pay me anything up front, and you don't owe me a fee unless I win your case. My fee comes out of the recovery. The percentage goes up because filing suit and handling an appeal take substantially more time and work.
if your case settles before I file a lawsuit
if I file suit
if the case goes to appeal
Common Questions About Houston Personal Injury Claims
Do I need a lawyer for my injury?
Sometimes you don't, and I'll tell you if that's the case. Generally it's worth calling when a doctor treated you, when someone else clearly caused the injury, or when an insurance company has already contacted you about a settlement.
How much is my personal injury case worth?
No honest attorney can tell you that on a first call, and you should be careful with anyone who does. The value depends on your injuries, your medical costs, your lost income, who was at fault, and how much insurance coverage exists.
How long does a personal injury case take?
Most cases run a year or more. If the insurance company won't pay fairly and I have to file a lawsuit, that can add another one to two years.
Have you handled a case like mine?
Probably. I've handled hundreds of injury claims in about 25 years of practice, and a large share of my work is falls at big-box stores and other commercial properties, which many Houston attorneys turn down.
